 Wine Maps

This page will inform you on exactly where your wine comes from...

Most countries grow the same grapes varieties, but its the distinct types of soil (terroirs) and climate which makes the biggest difference.

You will find most Australian Chardonnays will be full of fruity flavours, where the Chardonnays from France, will be more minerally and drier.

Old World countries, such a France, Spain & Italy name their wines after the region it is made, rather than the grape variety.

Rioja (Spain) for instance is a region in the North of Spain. This region offers not just Red wines, but also Rose and White. The Red Rioja's are predominately made from the Tempranillo grape, the Rose wine is made from the Granacha grape variety and the White is primarily with the Viura grape. However all three wines are called Rioja's.

Chateaunuf-du-pape, is a famous red wine from the Rhone Valley, in the South East of France. This wine is usually made from four different grapes; Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre & Picpoul. There are 116 vineyards in Chateaunuf-du-pape alone!

Most countries have a 'signature' grape and this is when they feel and get told that, a particular grape variety tastes better from their country than any other around the world. Argentina's signature grape, has to be the Malbec grape. Malbec does not have the blackcurranty fruitiness of Cabernet; rather it is a bit darker, and a little more savoury, with spice and earth undertones.

Chile has the Carmenere Grape, which was originally a French grape, but found it had better results grown in this South American country. Its smooth, with coffee and chocolate flavours and more often than not, its aged in oak to give it that smoky vanilla tone.

Italy, is currently more famous for its Pinot Grigio, with its light and delicate style, whilst most Sauvignon Blanc lovers will tell you New Zealand is where its at, along with some fantastic Pinot Noirs!
